April 30, 2024 - A cross-examination duo at Hill Country College Preparatory High School made school history as the first team to qualify for a state UIL debate competition this spring.
Sophomores Keshav Singh and Isabella Villarreal won two rounds against Robert G. Cole High School to advance to the 3A UIL state cross-examination debate meet.
“They play into each other’s strengths, bringing strong arguments to the table every chance they get,” says Kayleigh Corres, debate coach and teacher at HCCPHS. “They intently listen to the facts and are constantly learning more about political topics and current events to stay informed.”
Cross-examination debate consists of a team of two who analyze a problem, research the problem, and present the most effective case for or against a given proposition. A round includes 90 minutes of oral arguments in a structured format. Each team argues the affirmative side as well as the negative side of the resolution.
“I’m incredibly proud of the hard work, quick turnaround and dedication that these students showed,” Corres says. “They are exceptionally brilliant students, and I know the skills they gained in this competition will benefit them for decades to come.”
