Oct. 26, 2022 - Students from across the Comal Independent School District stepped up to volunteer during Big Serve Weekend, Oct. 8-9.
They helped with campus beautification projects, community projects and more.
“I like helping people,” says Aiden Ormond, an eighth-grade student at Church Hill Middle School. “It feels good to make a difference.”
Ormond along with soccer teammates, Mason Wise and Benjamin Dubicki, also students at CHMS, volunteered with Steve’s Pantry, which is part of Gruene United Methodist Church. The teenagers painted interior walls, cleaned washers, dryers and refrigerators and swept the floors.
Steve’s Pantry serves about 1,100 people a month in the community providing food assistance, laundry and showers. Volunteers with Big Serve helped update both the front and back room for the pantry. The front room is where guests are greeted, and the back room is a shopping area with food and hygiene items.
Students and families from Kinder Ranch Elementary School volunteered for a campus beautification project on Saturday. They cleaned landscaping beds, removed weeds and brush and picked up trash around the campus.
“We wanted to show students that they can make a positive impact,” says Laura De La Garza, KRES principal, “and to provide them with opportunities to feel the satisfaction that comes from contributing and helping others.”
Startzville Elementary had the same idea. Students and families cleaned the campus’ Sow Healthy Garden spaces, decorated planters and more.
In all, the weekend was a big success with more than 1,100 volunteers, and students and families enjoyed a day giving back to their communities.
